✔️ We have the right to feel safe at home, on the road, and in our community
✔️ We should take immediate action to address violence, open/disruptive drug use, and reckless driving
✔️ There are approachable ways to effect immediate change - including better enforcement of noise complaints and revving car engines, encouraging pedestrian safety for Brady Street, and hosting resident-led meetings to discover and actively address issues of crime
✔️ The City can and should confront the root causes of crime to ensure safer streets for all residents
✔️ We can develop a formal enforcement improvement plan with community stakeholders, long-term and short-term residents, and department officials
"Everyone has the right to feel safe at home, on the road, and in our community. We must take immediate action to address violent crime and reckless driving while investing in common sense strategies to reduce the root causes of crime."
Funding human needs and opportunities helps keep our communities safe. We need to stop relying on reactionary policies and prioritize increased access to health care, jobs, housing, food, public education, and transportation to give neighbors opportunities for a safe and secure future.
Alexander grew up watching a close family member struggle with the barriers created by a decades-old felony conviction. He has always cared about trying to stop the human carnage wrought by the criminal justice system. He has spent his entire professional career working for the Wisconsin State Public Defender's office, mostly working on serious felonies.
Our criminal justice system is poorly managed, denies people dignity across the entire system (both defendants and victims) and needs better enforcement and administration. Voters deserve transparency as to why this system is failing. We see the consequences every day, and Alexander is ready to do something about it.
✔️ We must protect renters and homeowners from predatory absentee landlords and corporate real estate developers
✔️ We must support the development of affordable housing in a sustainable manner that maintains the character of the East Side
✔️ We must promote policies that protect owner-occupied neighborhoods and preserve our district's income diversity and quality of life
✔️ We must ensure stable, diverse, middle-class neighborhoods with a family-friendly focus throughout our district
✔️ We must ensure that dense new developments, when they are to be built, should be constructed in a manner befitting the character of the area ensures adequate parking and congestion control for all residents
"As a community, we can do a better job developing the neighborhood in a sustainable way that allows all residents to enjoy our East Side"
Milwaukee is growing.
People, amenities, services, developments. We read about these changes all the time, and see the growth right on our block. While this is great for the tax base and our quality of life as Milwaukeeans, growth has costs that sometimes harm - or even irrevocably change - the places that we know and love.
One of one of the best districts in our city is undoubtedly the East Side. From the sleek towers along the Lakefront, to the charming bustle of historic Brady Street, to the quirky diversity of Riverwest, to the staid Victorians that fill out the quiet Downer Woods, we are blessed to exist in the center of what many would call "Milwaukee at It's Finest!" This means that plenty of new people want to visit, live, and even raise their families in our neighborhood.
Together, we face the problem of making room for everyone in a sustainable way. We cannot afford to lose what makes District 3 such a desirable place, and we need to accommodate for the problems faced by any metropolitan area with such a growing population.
The City needs to invest in additional resources to ensure everyone has access to safe housing. I believe new programs created at the City level are key to achieving a meaningful decrease to homelessness. Putting unhoused folks into homes, and helping our unhoused neighbors struggling with mental illness get access to care will not only help them, but will allow our community to feel better as well. I also applaud the “Right to Counsel” program that provides a right to free legal representation for persons in eviction or foreclosure proceedings.
Additionally, we must ensure that new developments across the District conform to plans co-created by current residents of our neighborhood. This includes plans to address parking challenges and mitigate increased traffic and foot-level density. We need to retain the historic housing stock whenever possible, and focus new development along existing transit corridors. There must also be enforcement of parking minimums on-lot that prevent unnecessary parking tickets and difficulties providing street services like snowplowing and trash pickup.
In doing this early planning, we can guarantee that the East Side we love will continued to be enjoyed by all parties for generations to come.
