Public Transportation

We all benefit when we have a strong transit system. My entire life Milwaukee’s MCTS has been failed by County leaders. For years  Milwaukee’s transit system has been cut, abused, underfunded, derided, and ignored. The result is that a system countless working people in this community rely on is less than reliable itself, and becoming less convenient even while folks are left with no other option. We need to mandate secure and stable funding to ensure MCTS has a bright future. We need to ensure transit workers have the dignity and security that comes with an employer safe from consistent budget cuts, route cancellations, etc. The County needs to prioritize our public transportation system as we move towards a future less dependent on personal vehicles. We need Milwaukee to be competitive with regional and national competitors, and that means creating a healthy community with reliable and convenient public transportation.

Parks

I've used our beautiful park system my entire life, it's a gem of our county. I walk through Lake Park and on the Oak Leaf Trail almost daily. The lack of priority funding is an embarrassment. 500 million or more in deferred maintenance is unacceptable and endangers our park system's existence for future generations. I oppose reckless privatization schemes and the sale of any public parkland.

We must find ways to stabilize funding and prioritize park maintenance and development for the enjoyment of the entire community.

Criminal Justice

Funding human needs and opportunities helps keep our communities safe. We need to stop relying on reactionary policies and prioritize increased access to health care, jobs, housing, food, public education, and transportation to give neighbors opportunities for a safe and secure future.

Growing up watching a close family member struggle with the barriers created by a decades-old felony conviction I've always cared about trying to stop the human carnage wrought by the criminal justice system. I've spent my entire professional career working for the Wisconsin State Public Defender's office, mostly working on serious felonies.

People are dying in the jail. Our criminal justice system is poorly managed, denies people dignity across the entire system (both defendants and victims) and needs better administration. The County Board has a duty to take care of the people in the care of the Sheriff's Department in the Jail. Voters deserve transparency as to why this system is failing. I see the consequences every day, and I'm ready to do something about it.

Housing

The County needs to invest in additional resources to ensure everyone has access to safe housing. I believe new programs created at the County level are key to achieving a meaningful decrease to homelessness. Putting unhoused folks into homes, and helping our unhoused neighbors struggling with mental illness get access to care will not only help them, but will allow our community to feel better as well. I also applaud the “Right to Counsel” program that provides a right to free legal representation for persons in eviction or foreclosure proceedings.
